Social Theory and Pop Culture: ‘Trad Wives’, Yesteryear, Married at First Sight and Feminist Backlash

  • Glasgow Zine Library 32-34 Albert Road Glasgow, Scotland, G42 8DN United Kingdom (map)

Please note: this event will be held in person.

In this instalment of the Zine Library’s ‘Social Theory and Pop Culture’ series, Dr Gemma Flynn will present a talk using Susan Faludi’s landmark text ‘Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women’ (1991) to explain the recent rise of TradWives.

Faludi argued that periods of feminist progress are often followed by cultural reactions that celebrate a return to more traditional gender roles and question whether feminism has gone too far.

Through a no-spoilers discussion of Caro Claire Burke’s ‘Yesteryear’ and Channel 4’s ‘Married at First Sight’, we will look at this trend in further detail, using feminist social theory to better understand why these ideas have become so prominent again.
