‘The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House’: Harry & Meghan, ‘Spare’ and Theories of Abolitionism

Please note: this event will take place online.

This next instalment of the Zine Library’s Social Theory & Pop Culture series will introduce the work of Audre Lorde and Abolitionist theorists like Angela Davis to set out exactly why abolition might now be necessary for many social institutions - the police, the prison system, the family, the five day working week and perhaps the monarchy. Using the recent public repositioning undertaken by Harry & Meghan, we will consider the potential for abolitionist movements in the coming years.

Specifically - when we employ half-hearted rebellion in the name of progress, do we actually further legitimise the failing institution? What makes us so afraid of abolition? Can we use the social theory of great thinkers like Lorde and Davis to see abolition as not only necessary, but joyful? What is the connection between me paying taxes and Prince Harry watching episodes of Family Guy in a castle and how can I meaningfully assert my distaste for that flow of capital? Join Dr Gemma Flynn on Wednesday March 8th for an online event that will explore why abolitionism could be for you!
