Magical Overthinking and Me: Conversation and Q&A with Amanda Montell

Please note: this event will be held online on Zoom.

Join us for a conversation and Q&A with bestselling author Amanda Montell as she discusses her new book The Age of Magical Overthinking.

Blending cultural criticism and personal narrative to unravel the complexities of cognitive bias and the allure of magical thinking, Montell explores the belief that internal thoughts can influence external events, from manifesting prosperity to transforming relationships through loyalty alone. Amid the chaos of the modern information age, Montell contends that our coping mechanisms are overloaded, pushing irrationality to unprecedented levels.

Drawing from the linguistic brilliance of Wordslut and the sociological depth of Cultish, her earlier works, Montell humorously dissects cognitive biases, from the "Halo effect" shaping our perceptions of celebrities to the "Sunk Cost Fallacy" trapping us in detrimental relationships. With her trademark wit, she offers a message of hope, empathy, and forgiveness for our anxiety-laden selves.
