Ahead of the UK release of You Can See Everything, the next instalment of Glasgow Zine Library’s Social Theory & Pop Culture series will focus on Nathan Fielder and Elizabeth Holmes, two icons of ‘Hyperreality’.
Join Dr Gemma Flynn for a retrospective of Nathan Fielder’s hilarious and unsettling body of work, including Nathan for You, The Curse and The Rehearsal, alongside the case of disgraced blood-testing innovator Elizabeth Holmes. In this session, we will consider both of these layered 'presentations of self' to gain an understanding of the postmodern concept of 'Hyperreality'.
Drawing on the work of French philosopher Jean Baudrillard, we will look at the ways in which these elaborate performances have become increasingly difficult to distinguish from a simulation. How useful is the concept of ‘Hyperreality’ to viewers aiming to understand their lives in a post-truth world? Does postmodern performance mostly highlight harm or can it cause harm, and how can we untangle this? What do these creators actually mean when they tell us that we can see everything?
