Utopia Unwound

  • Glasgow Zine Library 636 Cathcart Road Glasgow, Scotland, G42 8AA United Kingdom (map)

Please note: this event is for People of Colour only and will be held in person at Glasgow Zine Library.

Where is Utopia?

Who discovered Utopia?

How do we reinvent Utopia?

Since the genesis of Thomas More’s Utopia in 1516, Utopian fiction is a genre that has been tied into the imperialist fantasies of white Europeans.

This workshop aims to reimagine the ‘good places’ of Utopian fiction. By engaging with pre-colonial history we will examine the narratives of ecological, societal, and religious practices of colonised places as if continuing untouched by imperialism.

Through a series of creative writing exercises – focused on myths, cultural legends, and oral storytelling – participants will untangle Utopian fictions from settler narratives and ask the question: could paradise actually exist?

Bring pens, notepads, or laptops: write however feels comfortable for you.
